The goal | The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the notion of communicative competence, to help them understand the distinction between grammatical and pragmatic competence and to develop their pragmatic competence so that their linguistic behaviour in English is (also) socio-pragmatically appropriate in any given situation. | |||
The outcome | Students understand the concept of communicative competence (CC); appreciate the importance of developing CC in L2; recognize similarities between L1 and L2 aiding the development of CC in L2; recognize differences between L1 and L2 hampering the development of CC in L2; consciously develop their L2 CC and suppress their L1 CC in L2 communication. | |||

Contents of lectures | the fundamental notions of communication, communicative competence (CC), models of CC, dimensions of CC (grammatical, sociolinguistic, discourse, strategic), strategies for developing CC; pragmatics and pragmatic failure, cross-cultural pragmatic transfer; developing pragmatic competence in the FL classroom, authentic materials in developing FL pragmatic competence. | |||
Contents of exercises | Seminars/practice classes will concentrate on data analysis (video clips, dialogues, talk shows, etc) in order to compare and contrast realizations of various speech acts in L1 and L2 and the use of politeness strategies depending on the contextual variables. | |||
