The goal | An overview of the beginning of modern Hungarian literature, its development, literary movements and significant literary works, (at the turn of the 20th century). | |||
The outcome | The students are introduced to the literary tendencies, movements, life works and representative literary works of the Hungarian literature, of that period. Two tests, successfully completed a written and oral examination. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Literary and historical significance of the turn of the 20th century. Literary and artistic movements (naturalism, symbolism, secession, impressionism). Pre – symbolism. Aestheticism, regionalism, new populist – national trends. Development of modernism. Nyugat literary journal and Endre Ady’s poetry. Symbolism, secession and impressionism in Hungarian lyric poetry in the early 20th century. From aesthetic modernism to avant - garde. | |||
Contents of exercises | The students are introduced to concrete texts written by prominent authors from the period thematically covered. Text analysis and interpretation. | |||

Methods of teaching | Theoretical lectures encompass teaching material presentation with the students’ active participation. Highlighting of certain processes and tendencies, analogies, common characteristics and deviations of some literary works. Practical work encompasses the development of dialogue with the students, concrete texts’ interpretation and analysis. Development of the students’ written and oral expression skills in the texts’ interpretation and analysis. | |||
