The goal | The aim of this course is to present to the students different socio-historical and political aspects of the power over life, conceptions of biopolitics and biopower in the context of the contemporary social changes. This general aim could be specified as following: a) understanding of the sociological and historical aspects of the genealogy of biopolitics; b) analytical thinking and understanding of the relations between politics, science, corporeality and life in contemporary social and cultural processes. | |||
The outcome | After the completion of this course, students will learn the most important concepts, models and theories on biopolitics. In addition, students will be able for the independent and critical assessment of the historical, cultural and sociological aspects of biopolitics. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Theoretical teaching includes the presentation and explanation of the following thematic units: 1. orders of power/knowledge: sovereignty, discipline, regulation; 2. historical emergence of a new biological order; 3. medicalization of society and the new technologies of social control; 4. concepts of biopolitics; 5. modern politics and regulation of life; 6. risk management and security issues in the global social order; 7. neoliberalism and governmentality; 8. politics of borders in global social processes; 9. concept of biopower; 10. body, corporeality and identity; 11. biopolitics of the information society; 12. posthumanism. | |||
Contents of exercises | Readings of the key articles and parts of the books in the field of biopolitics; analysis and discussion of various textual and audio-visual materials, presentation of seminar papers and essays. | |||
