The goal | Introduction to the relevant theoretical frameworks for the study of translation as a process and as a product. | |||
The outcome | Upon the completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. recognize and describe research methods in linguistic, descriptivist and functionalist theories of translation 2. choose an appropriate theoretical framework to analyze a translation, translation process or an aspect of a professional practice and explain its applicability. | |||
Contents | ||||
Contents of lectures | Translation Studies as a research discipline (Holmes’ map). Definitions of a translation as a process and a product. Types of translation. Translation unit. Translation problem. Quality in translation. Basic concepts in the following theoretical approaches to translation: 1. linguistic (the concept and types of equivalence, translation strategies and procedures), 2. descriptivist (the concept of norm, priority of the target culture, translation universals), 3. functionalist (skopos, extratextual and intratextual factors, brief, adequacy). | |||
