The goal | Learning about the status of English in the world today and about the features of first language varieties, sociolects and registers of English. | |||
The outcome | Students have learnt the features of dialects of English, can identify and understand speakers from different countries. They have learnt about the status of English in the world today and about the standards crucial in ELT. They can analyze the texts from different registers and successfully apply the knowledge in active language use. They have developed linguistic sensitivity towards different ethnic and age groups and gender differences that are manifest in language. | |||

Contents of lectures | International English, standard language, world English and ELT. History of spread of English from the British Isles. Dialects (British, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, South African). Pidgins, creoles. Spoken and written language. sociolects: age, gender, ethnicity, occupation. Political correctness. Media discourse: newspapers, magazines. Internet language. | |||
